How Poor oral Hygiene Can Affect Your Overall Health
Poor oral hygiene means neglecting the cleanliness of your mouth and teeth, which can lead to various dental and overall health problems.

Causes of dental and oral diseases
Your oral cavity collects all sorts of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Some of them belong there, making up the normal flora of your mouth. They’re generally harmless in small quantities. But a diet high in sugar creates conditions in which acid-producing bacteria can flourish. This acid dissolves tooth enamel and causes dental cavities.
Bacteria near your gumline thrive in a sticky matrix called plaque. Plaque accumulates, hardens, and migrates down the length of your tooth if it isn’t removed regularly by brushing and flossing. This can inflame your gums and cause the condition known as gingivitis.
Increased inflammation causes your gums to begin to pull away from your teeth. This process creates pockets in which pus may eventually collect. This more advanced stage of gum disease is called periodontitis.
Symptoms of dental and oral problems
• ulcers, sores, or tender areas in the mouth that won’t heal after a week or two
• bleeding or swollen gums after brushing or flossing
• chronic bad breath
• sudden sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures or beverages
• pain or toothache
• loose teeth
• receding gums
• pain with chewing or biting
• swelling of the face and cheek
• clicking of the jaw
• cracked or broken teeth
• frequent dry mouth
Diseases Caused by Poor Dental Hygiene
1. Cardiovascular Disease

Between 80-90% of heart disease can be prevented, and proper dental hygiene is one effective way to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Periodontal disease is directly linked to artery inflammation. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, causing arteries to harden and increasing the risk of stroke or heart attack. Poor oral health is also associated with high blood pressure and dense LDL cholesterol, further elevating cardiovascular risk. Preventing gum disease through proper oral care and regular dental visits is crucial.

2. Alzheimer's Disease
Poor oral health can lead to inflamed gums. Bacteria traveling from the mouth to the brain can kill brain cells, potentially leading to memory loss. Oral bacteria have been implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Pathogenic oral bacteria called spirochetes have been studied as a potential cause of Alzheimer's disease, with their presence being significantly higher in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Salivary diagnostic testing can detect these oral pathogens.

3. Diabetes
According to the American Diabetes Association, many people are unaware and undiagnosed. Diabetes increases the risk of infections, including gum infections. Periodontal disease can make it more challenging to control blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of developing diabetes. An estimated 95% of adults with diabetes also have periodontal disease.
Impact on Glycemic Control: Inflammation caused by poor oral hygiene can disrupt the body's defense system and make it harder to control blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that treating periodontal disease can lead to a reduction in HbA1c levels in diabetic patients.

4. High-Risk Pregnancy
A study by BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth found that women with periodontal disease are six times more likely to give birth prematurely. The bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum, present in the oral cavity, has been found in the amniotic fluid, placenta, and membranes of preterm birth patients.

5. Respiratory Issues
Poor dental hygiene is connected to a higher risk of respiratory issues. Bacteria in the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs or travel through the bloodstream, potentially leading to respiratory infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, COPD, and lung disease.

6. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Johns Hopkins University has studied the link between poor oral health and rheumatoid arthritis. Results show a correlation between the bacteria Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and periodontal disease. Bacteria from periodontitis and gingivitis can increase inflammation in the body, resulting in a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
