Building a career off-road
This panel is designed as a conversation with the audience and features both managers and engineers who have jumped off the career ladder and chosen to remain individual contributors. Together, they will engage the audience in a conversation designed to show how leadership and collaboration can exist beyond titles. Teams and careers can be built upon shared creativity, curiosity, trust and support. We intend to share lessons from our own experience, success and yes, even missteps.
Come for a discussion about finding balance between team needs and individual growth; navigating organizational cultures; and understanding the value that is derived from professional freedom with intent. While we all work together now, each of us has worked at other companies and in other circumstances where we thrived mainly because we were able to balance autonomy with a deep sense of collaboration and adventure.

Sherry Sontag
Sherry Sontag came to Bloomberg Engineering after co-authoring “Blind Man’s Bluff,” a New York Times bestseller about submarine espionage during the Cold War. Hired by Bloomberg 17 years ago for her ability to talk to anyone and actually listen, she recently has been working to create community consensus among developers as part of the Code Governance Solutions team. She is a graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and Barnard College, Columbia University.
Lara Bailey
Lara has presented at ACCU for several years, as well as at CppCon and other C++ conferences. A software engineer working in infrastructure at Bloomberg, Lara creates tools to generate and maintain shared C++ libraries and documentation in order to help application developers write software that integrates and communicates in robust and efficient ways. Lara has a keen interest in source control systems, build systems, and best practices surrounding their use.
Marek Paska
Marek Paska has worked at Bloomberg for nearly a decade. He leads a team of engineers who are responsible for various C++ components and services that are used across the firm. Earlier in his career, Marek worked on static analysis tools, as well as on video processing systems. He earned his Ph.D. in the area of software verification. He claims software engineering at scale is great fun.
Michelle D'Souza
Michelle Fae D’Souza is a Software Engineer at Bloomberg, where she develops C++ code for the company’s order-trade entry and modification (OTE API) solution, which streamlines trading activity for many firms in the financial world. She is an active member of Bloomberg's C++ Guild and is a Technical Rep at Bloomberg. Michelle holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a Davis Scholar and President of the Computer Science Honor's Society.
John Pavan
John Pavan is an Engineering Team Lead at Bloomberg. He has been developing software for more than 25 years. His primary interests are in distributed systems, such as service-oriented and microservice architectures, and he has most recently been writing software using C++ and Python. John’s prior experience includes work on search engines, UI frameworks, data visualization, and algorithm design.
Cal Pratt
Cal was new to build systems and C++ when he joined Bloomberg Engineering’s Foundations, Build and Intelligence / Distributed Build team. Navigating what he calls the ‘slope of enlightenment and the valley of despair,’ Cal learned to ask questions about everything, and then ask more! Finding documentation unclear, he rewrote it. When he found a hole in the build process, he decided to fill it. The result is an open source project called BuildGrid, which executes build jobs remotely on a grid of computers, speeding up build times massively.
