Presentation title: Effect of inhalation exposure to metal oxide nanoparticles on efficacy of a vaccine protecting against house dust mite allergy

Abstract: The increased use of metal oxide NPs has raised concerns about potential risks to the health of workers in industry. Inhalation exposure of metal oxide NPs such as copper oxide (CuO) NPs can lead to pulmonary inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness that results in greater susceptibility to developing asthma or asthmatic-like symptoms in industry workers compared to the general population. Allergies and allergic asthma can also result from several allergens that people are exposed to in daily life such as house dust mite allergens. One way of potentially combatting allergic asthma is through vaccines. We have recently developed an experimental house dust mite (HDM) vaccine that is effective at protecting against dust mite allergen induced allergic responses. We are using this vaccine as a tool to investigate the effect of inhalation exposure of CuO NPs on the efficacy of a vaccine protecting against house dust mite allergy.

Biographical Sketch: Dr. Aliasger Salem is the Bighley Chair and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and head of the Division of Pharmaceutics and Translational Therapeutics at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He was educated in applied chemistry at Aston University of Science and Technology, Birmingham, UK (BSc 1998). He received his Ph.D. in pharmacy at the University of Nottingham, UK in 2002. He then received postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine until 2004. He is an elected fellow of the American Association for Pharmaceutical Scientists and an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. His research interests are primarily focused on nanotechnology, nanotoxicity, cancer therapies and regenerative medicine. He is the author of over 200 scholarly publications, patents, and abstracts, and has published in journals that include Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Materials, Nature Reviews Urology, Science Translational Medicine, Advanced Materials, The AAPS Journal, Bioconjugate Chemistry, Biomaterials, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Research, the Journal of Controlled Release, and the International Journal of Pharmaceutics. Salem is the Associate Editor for the AAPS Journal and regularly serves on international and national grant review panels.
