Sustainable Development Goal 5 (S D G 5) aims to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls by 2030, addressing systemic barriers such as discrimination, violence, unpaid care work, and unequal political and economic participation. Progress has been uneven globally; while primary education parity improved, women remain underrepresented in STEM and leadership roles, with labor force participation stagnating and women often engaged in vulnerable employment. Challenges like gender-based violence affect one-third of women worldwide, and unpaid care burdens limit economic mobility. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened these disparities, highlighting the need for robust legal frameworks, social reforms, and societal attitude shifts. In India, legislative milestones like the Women's Reservation Act (2023) mark progress, but cultural norms and implementation gaps persist. Initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao have improved sex ratios and access to education, yet deep-rooted societal biases remain. Achieving S D G 5 requires intersectional policies that eliminate discriminatory laws, recognize unpaid care work, and promote women’s leadership across sectors. The framework of S D G 5 rests on three pillars: legal reform, care redistribution, and women’s political participation, emphasizing societal norm change. Historically, women’s rights movements have evolved through waves—from suffrage to intersectional feminism and digital activism—each expanding the scope of empowerment. Globally, gender equality boosts economies; for example, advancing women’s participation could add trillions to GDP. However, current progress is slow, with regions like the Nordics exemplifying successful models through comprehensive policies like parental leave, childcare, and pay transparency. In India, challenges include declining female labor participation, political underrepresentation, violence, harmful practices, and gender biases. Solutions involve legal enforcement, social norm transformation, men’s engagement, and inclusive policies, aiming for a society where women and girls can fully realize their rights and potential as active agents of sustainable development.
