EASIEST WAY TO MAKE A MASHUP LIVE!

Making a mash-up live is a crucial part of creative mixing, and fusing two songs together and surprising the crowd is what DJ’s do best.

The key in making a live mashup is preparation. So we first have to prepare our songs, and then our software. Once we get those two things done, performing a mashup live will be a synch!

► PRO TIPS:

1. Try to make sure that your acapella and song are in the same key. If they aren’t then your mash-up is gonna sound pretty bad.

2. Be tasteful on how you use your acepellas with the beat. in performing a mash-up, less is more.

3. Make sure you properly beat grid your acapellas. Just downloading an acapella and syncing and playing it with a song isn’t going to work. Preparation is key.

► SCRIPT:

For this tutorial we’re going to use two songs. The first is tepsicore by Carlos Alosilla, and the second is a Put your hands up acapella by lil jon.

Preparation is key in making a mashup

So The first step is to correctly beat grid our song and more importantly the acapella. This is by far the most important step.

And we do this so that when we play an acapella with the song, the beats will match, and both songs will be be perfectly in sync.

So to beat grid our song in rekordbox dj, we select, this icon over here, and then we click this to make a beat grid marker.

This will make sure that the first beat, will be aligned the whole way thru from here on out.

To make sure that you beat gridded the acapella properly try playing it with a simple drum beat. If both songs aren’t in sync. Try re adjusting the beat grid marker.

The next step is to prepare our software:

So let’s activate sync on both decks, with our master deck being the edm song, and let’s also activate quantize on the acapella. This will make sure that when we trigger the acapella while it is playing, it will still stay in beat with the song.

And now the third step is to play the acapella with the beat. So when the beat drops, simply play the acepella. Since sync is activated on both decks, the acaeplla will just stick to the beat grid of the master song

But if you wanna get creative and expressive try manipulating the acapella with the beat.

So for my demo i did two things. I kept cueing the acapella with an echo effect activated, and I also played around d with the drinks up sample.

It’s totally up to you and your creativity on how you want to manipulate and play with the acapella.
