It was my second visit to the place in June, 2017, when I felt inspired for a short film on the Mer Beel, after being thoroughly captivated by the immersive greenery & the rich biodiversity of the place.

Just a  little more than 20 kms from the OIL township of Duliajan, Mer Beel Eco Park provides the best resort for holidayers, bird watchers, water & boating enthusiasts, photographers, etc. to name a few. The place is accessible through road all throughout the year from surrounding townships of Naharkatia, Dibrugarh, Digboi. The park provides varied objects of interest according to the time of your visit. Though the best time to pay a visit is from the month of September to April.

Spread across a  space of 1533 bighas (1240 acres) of land this eco park is one of the biggest natural ecosystems around a strip of a stagnant water, which at some point of time was a tributary of the Buri Dihing river, flowing nearby. A total of 80 villages surround the main park system which is an island isolated by a parabolic loop of marshland. A number of species of birds, water fowls, ducks, herons have made this their permanent residence. Other migratory birds species arrive here during the migration period. Apart birds, small quadrupeds & bipeds such as foxes, squirrels, monkeys inhabit the forest surrounding the park. The efforts of nonprofits such as Nature’s Beckon needs special mention towards the setup, exploration & documentation of the flora & fauna with the support of Oil India Limited & the Mer Beel Eco Preservation Committee. Worth noting here is that the Mer Beel is yet to be recognised under the Ramsar Convention for wetlands by the Ministry of Forests & Environment though the site has been proposed for the National Conservation of Wetlands program.

The project which is still in its infancy hopes to come up with a seasonal food joint, a small amphitheatre cum auditorium, tree houses, etc. as part of its future development initiatives.

For those who haven’t visited the place, it is a paradise that waits to be explored.
