How to perform the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) using the MAT

The Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) is a dynamic test designed to test the strength, flexibility, and proprioception of a patients lower limb. It is a measure of dynamic balance that provides insight to a pracititoner at the level of function of their patient or client and research has shown that this test is particularly useful for physiotherapists rehabilitating lower limb injuries such as ankle sprains or ACL injury.

The patient performs 4 reaches in 8 different directions with the maximum reach distance used to compare for side to side.
