Description:
Session 1: The Ten Martyrs - Historical Context.

The death of the ten martyrs at the hands of the Roman Empire is described in midrash and liturgy, and was a turning point in the history of Am Yisrael. In this class we will explore the historical context of the story, searching out the roots of the conflict it describes and seeking to understand its primary message.


Session 2:
The Ten Martyrs in liturgy - A Historical Vision

The story of the ten martyrs appears at a crux point in the prayer service of Yom Kippur, inviting us to engage our personal repentance as a manifestation of the cosmic drama of Exile and Return. Through this juxtaposition of past and present, the machzor is offering guidance that should inform all of our Divine service. In this class we will peel back the layers of time and meaning around this midrash in order to expose the historical vision on which it rests.
