Indonesia Protests: In Jakarta, hundreds of women dressed in pink joined growing protests against lawmakers’ perks and police brutality, wielding brooms as a symbol of sweeping away corruption and repression. Organized by the Alliance of Indonesian Women, the protests carried witty slogans such as “Reform the Police” and “Your Sweet Promises Cause Diabetes.” The demonstrations follow a week of nationwide unrest after a motorcycle taxi driver was killed by a police vehicle, sparking outrage and violence that has left at least 10 people dead. Protesters, including students and rights groups, accuse the government of wasteful spending while ordinary Indonesians face economic hardship. President Prabowo Subianto, who flew to China for a military parade despite the unrest, has labeled parts of the protests as signs of “terrorism and treason.” Meanwhile, lawmakers are promising reforms — including evaluating perks, halting overseas trips, and improving transparency. Student unions are pressing for the release of detained protesters and an independent probe into police violence, warning that citizens are being forgotten after elections. Fitch Ratings has cautioned that the unrest could hurt Indonesia’s economy and pose long-term political challenges.
