A #newborn infant, or #neonate is a child under one month of age, but for practical purposes. Neonatal jaundice is a yellow discoloration of a newborn baby's skin and eyes that occurs when the baby's blood contains an excess of #bilirubin. There are two types of #neonataljaundice : Direct and Indirect jaundice. Indirect jaundice is a common one, & it happens because their livers aren’t mature enough to get rid of the bilirubin. Preterm kids are more prone to suffer with this & are more at risk. It usually settles within 2-3 weeks and the level of bilirubin decreases on its own & reaches normal level, & jaundice typically goes away on its own.
Direct jaundice is indicative of liver involvement and generally indicates a serious problem.
Sometimes when the indirect bilirubin levels are high beyond a certain level, babies are treated with #phototherapy. Parents must closely observe newborns for yellowness in the skin, eyes, urine, and #stool & if this persists beyond 2–3 weeks, check with your doctor and go for the blood tests and #liver function test to verify for jaundice and check whether its direct or indirect jaundice.
