Twin Engine Power | 1962 Ed Roth Mysterion Hot Rod Explained
Description
The 1962 Ed Roth Mysterion is one of the most legendary custom cars of the 1960s, built by the famous car builder and artist Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. Unlike any conventional car of its time, the Mysterion was designed purely as a rolling piece of art and showstopper. Its futuristic styling featured twin bubble canopies, an outrageous fiberglass body, and an unmistakable jet-age influence.
What made it even more radical was the twin-engine setup — Roth fitted two Ford 406 V8 engines side by side, each with its own transmission, creating a monstrous power display. The car sat on a custom-built chrome-plated frame, with suspension parts and detailing polished to perfection for car shows.
Inside, the Mysterion had a wild, space-age inspired interior with custom controls, bucket seats, and plenty of chrome accents. It wasn’t meant for daily driving — it was more of a concept art car, dazzling crowds at custom car shows and magazines.
Although the original car was eventually dismantled due to structural issues, the Mysterion remains a symbol of 1960s hot rod culture, showcasing Ed Roth’s creativity, artistry, and vision of the future. Today, it’s remembered as one of the most ambitious and iconic custom cars ever built.
