Being prepared for the unexpected!
I don’t normally post videos from rehearsals, but looking back at this footage with Cockney Rejects I thought it demonstrated the above point very well.
We only had "one" full band rehearsal before some shows I was booked to play with them. I had done my homework and got the set in shape beforehand and made sure to reference both old and more importantly new versions of songs so that when I played with the band they would feel comfortable with a different & new drummer. I always like to be as prepared as I can possibly be as in my experience ( & this has happened many times) there will be a curveball thrown your way. In this case it was a new (to me at least) added song intro that I had never heard. Fortunately, the rehearsal was going well and the band seemed happy up to this point so I felt confident enough to deal with a moment I wasn’t expecting. In short, because I had done my homework beforehand, I felt in control enough to deal with the situation..I was "prepared for the unexpected" This video captures the moment and we got through it and at the end of the song, which by the way in this video is the first time I played it with the band, well, they seem happy, and, I was happy to get through what could have been a pretty sticky moment & was able to take it in my stride. I’ve heard of stories where musicians (even pro) haven’t been and well, that’s another story.
