Suicide is one of the biggest contributors to global deaths. The rates vary significantly from country to country. Over 800,000 people die from suicide every single year, which means a death every 40 seconds. Globally, 1.4% of total deaths were from suicide, though this varies from country to country e.g. South Korea, suicides contribute to a depressing 5% share of total deaths while in Indonesia, this number is 0.5%. Suicide is the main cause of death among younger population (15-19 years) around the world.

In general, suicide rates are more prone to happen in rural areas throughout the world, triggered by many factors that impact the quality of life such as isolation, poverty, hard living conditions, etc.

In much of the world, suicide is stigmatized and condemned for religious or cultural reasons. In some countries, suicidal behavior is a criminal offence punishable by law. Suicide is therefore often a secretive act surrounded by taboo, and may be unrecognized, misclassified or deliberately hidden in official records of death.

Men are more than three times likely to commit suicide than women across nearly all cultures and backgrounds.

In the US it is estimated that 0.5 percent of the adults aged 18 or older made at least one suicide attempt. Based on the most recent Youth Risk Behaviors Survey in the US from 2019, 8.9 percent of youth in grades 9-12 reported that they had made at least one suicide attempt in the past 12 months.

Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world, but because it is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it is not included in the WHO’s statistics
