The S of our ABCS is seat depth.
Seat depth combined with cushion fill is the most important determinate of comfort.

Seat depth is called inside depth and is the measurement from the front of the seat to the back cushions. We’re not talking about total depth which is from the front to the back – so make sure to measure correctly while shopping.

Also while you’re figuring this out, pay attention to how you sit. For example, If I want to sit up straight in a deeper sofa you can add a pillow behind you. Or a deeper sofa may not a problem because you may either slouching a bit, sitting with your feet under you, or laying down.

A 1 rating is 22 inches or less like our Palm Springs sofa that has a 22” deep seat

Shorter seats are better for shorter individuals that like to sit upright and for chairs since you’re usually sitting up in a chair. This sofa’s depth of 22” and is still comfortable for a taller person like me to sit in, but it’s harder to fit 2 people on if they were to lay down.

A 2 rating is 23 to 24 inches like our Nantucket that has a 24” seat depth

This sofa is 2” deeper than our Palm Springs – which doesn’t sound like a lot – but can make a difference – especially if you like to sit upright.

What is a deeper seat good for? A seat with a 2 or 3 rating is great for laying down – especially if you like to spoon

Taller people may like a deeper seat better for sitting up, but shorter individuals may also find it comfortable if they like to sit with their feet up.

A 3 rating is 25 inches or more and is less common than our other two ratings and is typically an extra deep sofa.

This depth is great for rooms meant for lounging like TV or theater rooms and is in a style like our Menlo Park. It is also found on some styles that don’t have back cushions like our Cambridge – the classic chesterfield style
