Since September, bushfires have killed 18 people and destroyed more than 1,200 homes across New South Wales and neighbouring Victoria. At least 17 people remain missing after fires this week alone, while ecologists from the University of Sydney estimate that almost half a billion animals could have perished. There are even fears that entire species might have been lost.

This footage shot in southern New South Wales’ Monaro region shows dozens of kangaroos trying to escape as a bushfire.
