Project : Oil and Filter Change

Steps :
1) Warm the engine up. Let idle for about 1-2 minutes ;

2) Remove the drain plug which is found on the bottom left side of the engine. You will need a 19 mm socket to remove the drain plug ;

3) Remove the spring and metal strainer ;

4) As old oil is coming out, look for signs of dirt, metal filings, or moisture/water in the oil ;

5) Go to the other side and remove the filter cover ;

6) You will need a large Phillips head screwdriver and a 5 mm Allen key. Be careful not to strip the heads of the three bolts ;

7) Remove the old filter and inspect it for dirt and/or metal filings ;

8) Insert the new filter and place back the filter cover ;

9) Insert the three bolts and tighten each a little at a time to make sure the cover is flush with the surface ;

10) Remove the filler plug and put in about 100 ml of clean oil to purge the rest of the old oil out ;

11) Once the oil is completed drained, clean the surfaces and insert the metal strainer, spring, and cover. Hand tighten to make sure it is in the proper grooves and then use the 19 mm socket wrench to tighten ;

12) Add about (500 - 750ml) of new oil until you start seeing some oil through the oil level indicator window ;

13) Start the engine and let it idle a few minutes to allow the oil to circulate ;

14) Turn off the engine and check the oil level again. Top up if necessary ;

15 ) For best results, make sure the bike is upright (not slanted) when checking the oil level and that it is not running. Make sure the oil level is in between the Min and Max lines at all times.

Optional :

Test to see if oil is reaching the top of the engine (cylinder head) ...

1) Locate the 10 mm bolt on the top left side of the engine. It will be facing the back of the bike ;

2) Start the engine and let it idle a few minutes ;

3) Loosen the 10 mm bolt slowly at least to the halfway point ;

4) Place a rag to catch any oil that will come out ;

5) Loosen until the bolt is about to come out completely ;

6) If oil come out, cut the engine and tighten the bolt back again. This is a good sign. It means that oil is being circulated properly throughout the whole engine ;

7) If no oil comes out, cut the engine as this is a sign that there is a problem with the oil circulation. DO NOT LET ENGINE RUN IF THE CYLINDER HEAD IS NOT RECEIVING ANY OIL AS THE ENGINE MAY SEIZE.
