Let's be brutally honest for a second.
The journey of building a digital marketing agency isn't easy.
Just like any other online business, it requires years of hard work, persistence, education and experience. The digital world is vast, and navigating it can be really tricky.
There are a lot of gurus and self-proclaimed marketers in the digital marketing and direct response marketing space, and unfortunately they have given this industry a shady reputation.
I knew this from the get-go, and so my goal was always to provide real value to my clients using online advertising..
When I started GrowRev, we initially worked with construction companies, electricians and plumbers...basically anyone who was a business owner in the construction industry to provide the digital marketing services.
But pretty soon I realized we had to go up-market and higher end clientele, keeping the idea of creating a passive income in the online business world. At the end of the day, digital advertising can be a game changer for almost every industry, but if you’re going to spend the time and money acquiring clients, they may as well be clients with a real budget to spend on paid traffic and paid advertisement in general.
As it turns out, one of my clients was engaged to Loral Langemeier.
He asked us a bunch of questions, because his fiance needed someone to run Facebook ads. My business partner Matt is an industry expert on everything from Facebook ads, to Google ads, to SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I told my client we should get on a call with Loral.
The day of the call I had a family emergency and was really tempted to reschedule...but I didn’t. Instead, I took the call in the car as I was driving.
She asked us about a bunch of things, and then asked the question that would have sunk me if I was on my own.
“What is your experience running online events?”
Mine? ZERO.
Luckily, Matt’s background was in using paid traffic and paid advertising to pack out events, and we were able to move forward with the relationship.
She said that she was going to be in Calgary for an event.
SO!
I decided then to fly out to meet her in person. We met in Edmonton in the MIDDLE of winter (it was -28 C and I hate the snow and cold), and we boarded her private jet to fly to Calgary.
The flight was rough and we spent it throwing back wine (two bottles in 30 minutes). When the plane landed, Loral Langemeier was my first high end client.
We ended up filling her event with extremely cheap registrations, and from there got recommended to a bunch of other people in the industry.
Later when she got married, I was invited to their wedding in Banff.
What is the lesson here?
Well, my strategy was never a one call close. The higher end the client, the higher the effort required to close it. To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to build and nurture relationships.
That one client has turned into multiple million dollar clients for GrowRev.
Whether you’re in e-commerce, digital marketing, or just want to build something that will generate passive income, you probably need to go after a higher end clientele.

Get them on a phone call. Ideally with video! If you can’t meet in person, you MUST use video! It establishes rapport so much faster than a phone call ever could.

Building an online business is never easy, but it’s rewarding in a way that only business owners know.
