How Is “Domestic Violence” Defined For A Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO)?

A domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) in California is a family court order that can protect a victim of domestic violence by preventing that victim’s spouse or ex-spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, or ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend from going near and contacting that person. It can also provide the victim of domestic violence with sole custody of a child he/she has in common with the alleged perpetrator of domestic violence. What exactly is “domestic violence” as defined under the DVRO laws in California? I think everyone probably knows that physical violence including pushing, slapping, and grabbing is included in the definition of domestic violence for a DVRO in California. However, a domestic violence restraining order can be obtained in California even if there is absolutely no allegation of physical violence or even threats of physical violence. California allows someone to obtain a DVRO when someone “disturbs your peace”, exerts “coercive control” over you, and for other reasons that don’t involve allegations of physical violence of any kind.
