📖 Description

St. Lawrence, one of the seven deacons of Rome under Pope Sixtus II, is remembered for his fearless witness during the persecutions of Emperor Valerian in 258 A.D. When ordered to surrender the Church’s wealth, Lawrence boldly gathered the poor, the sick, and the outcast, declaring them the true treasures of the Church. Furious officials condemned him to death by fire on a gridiron. According to tradition, even in the flames he kept his faith — and his humor — saying to his executioners: “Turn me over, I am done on this side.” His courage and joy in martyrdom inspired conversions in Rome and made him one of the most beloved saints of the Church. Honored on August 10th, St. Lawrence is the patron saint of the poor, cooks, and comedians.
