The history of the barber pole is not as innocent as it may seem. In the past, barbers were not only hair stylists, but also surgeons and dentists. They would perform various procedures, including bloodletting, a practice believed to cure illnesses by removing blood from the body.

Barbers would use a special pole to advertise their services. The pole was painted with red and white stripes, representing blood and bandages, respectively. This was a sign to people that a barber was capable of performing medical procedures, including bloodletting.

However, the practice of bloodletting was controversial and dangerous. Many people suffered infections and other complications as a result. Eventually, the practice fell out of favor, and barbers began to focus solely on hair styling.

Today, the barber pole is mostly a symbol of tradition and nostalgia.
