Atiquizaya es un municipio del departamento de Ahuachapán, en El Salvador; cabe destacar que Atiquizaya es uno de los dos distritos con los que cuenta el departamento de Ahuachapán (el otro es la cabecera departamental).
Esta población fue fundada en tiempos inmemoriales por la tribu de los pokomames, pertenecientes a la etnia maya-quiché. Para finales del siglo XV sus pobladores fueron conquistados por guerreros yaquis o pipiles, quienes le cambiaron el nombre original y le dieron el nombre náhuat que aún conserva, el cual proviene de los vocablos At=agua e Iquizayan=comienzo, origen o sea “lugar abundantes de aguas; la razón de ese nombre posiblemente sea porque a su alrededor existen muchos manantiales de agua. Oficialmente fue fundado como municipio el 15 de febrero 1725. En 1859 obtuvo el título de villa y más tarde, en 1881, el de ciudad.
Las fiestas patronales de Atiquizaya se celebran del 1 al 8 de diciembre en honor a la Virgen de Concepción.
Dentro de los lugares recomendados a visitar en Atiquizaya se encuentran: El Salto de Malacatiupán, un lugar donde bajan cuatro cascadas de agua en forma de cataratas, en el río Agua Caliente y las piscinas de Ahuijuyo y Las Minas.
Atiquizaya posee una extensión territorial de 66,64 kilómetros cuadrados, en los que habita una población de más de 33 mil habitantes. El municipio se encuentra a una altura de 615 metros sobre el nivel del mar y a una distancia de 112.5 kilómetros de la capital, San Salvador.
