A tiger carcass was found on Saturday during a survey in Madhya Pradesh’s Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, taking the number of tiger deaths in the state to six in one week and 54 so far in 2025.
This is the highest annual toll recorded in the state since Project Tiger began in 1973. The carcass was found near a power line in the Chandia forest range of Umaria district, and electrocution has not been ruled out.
Officials are inspecting the power infrastructure to check for exposed or illegal wiring. The carcass has been sent for post-mortem, and forensic tests may be conducted if foul play is suspected.
Forest officials say most deaths this year were due to natural causes, mainly territorial fights linked to a rising tiger population.
Conservationists, however, have raised concerns over repeated deaths and possible electrocution inside core reserve areas, calling for better habitat management and checks on power lines.
