In this interview, Dorjee Sun, social entrepreneur and CEO of Carbon Conservation shares with us his passion for forests, sustainable development, conservation and climate change. He talks about the influence of his parents in engendering an ethos of hardwork, discipline and tenacity.



After establishing a number of successful businesses, Dorjee started Carbon Conservation as a private company to blend his love of business with a growing need to make a difference. Carbon Conservation finances the preservation of tropical rainforests and provides carbon credit revenues to local communities via 'Avoided Deforestation' and it now has carbon projects in several provinces in Indonesia including in biomass energy, waste management and compost for agriculture. The company has won Environmental Finance Magazine's Carbon Finance Deal of the Year, been a finalist in the Banksia Awards and FT's Sustainable Banking deal of the year for innovative projects.



Dorjee previously founded a recruitment software company and an education company which mentored over 25,000 students. He studied on scholarship at Peking University in China and graduated from UNSW with degrees in Law and Commerce and a Diploma in Asian Studies.


In 2009 he was named one of TIME Magazine Environmental Heroes, won the African Rainforest Conservancy's Earth Day Award where a new species of chameleon was named the Kinyongia Dorjeesuni and was the subject of an award winning documentary narrated by Hugh Jackman "The Burning Season" which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC.
Dorjee has demonstrated entrepreneurial talents, founding a number of companies including a recruitment software company and an education company which mentored over 25,000 students. He studied on scholarship at Peking University in China and graduated from UNSW with degrees in Law and Commerce and a Diploma in Asian Studies. He has served as co President of the UNSW Law Society, a University of Melbourne Asialink Leader, Youth Chair of the Ethnic Communities Council and spoken at APEC and many other think-tanks.
