Today Dunkirk is a busy northern French port. There are few reminders that here was played out one of the great dramas of World War Two. Having crushed Poland, Norway and Denmark, Hitler's armies turned their attention to Western Europe. This was 'Blitzkrieg', or "lightening war". Now it was the turn of France, Belgium and Holland to feel the full might of the German forces, and Churchill's British Government knew their comparatively small force was facing twenty-eight German divisions sweeping through the Low Countries towards the northern French coast. The Germans were attacking on three fronts. Holland surrendered on 14th May and as the British force fell back on Dunkirk plans were laid to ferry an entire army home to England using an armada of British ships, pleasure boats and small launches - it was to become known as "the miracle of Dunkirk"
