King Mattress vs California King Mattress - What's the difference?

The questions we consistently hear from our customers is what is a California (cal) King, Eastern King, Split King, or Regular King mattress and how are they different?

First what is an Eastern King - This name is the least common of them all, and and eastern king is actually the standard size king that most people reference when asking about a king bed. It dementions are 75 -75" wide by 80" long. This mattress if the most common because it fits anyone under 6'4" long enough space and room to sleep on the bed comfortably.

California King or as many people call them Cal King: This mattress is slightly different from an Eastern King. They get the name California because this size of mattress seems to be more popular on the west coast of the United States. The size demotions of a California King are 72" Wide by 84" Long. For people taller than 6'4" this mattress help keep them comfortable by giving them enough sleeping surface. A quick comparison is the Cal King is 4" Longer and 4" narrower.

Split King: A split king is an Eastern King (Regular King) Mattress cut in half. Similar to having two twin mattresses side by side. This set up is also referenced as getting two Twin XL mattresses. There are a number of benefits from this type of mattress set up. First is your spouse prefers a firm mattress and you prefer a soft mattress you can each choose the mattress that is best for you and help each of you get a better nights sleep. The second huge benefit of a split king is you are able to get separate adjustable bases which enables either mattress to be adjusted at the head, neck, back, or feet to help the person sleep better or read or watch tv in bed without affecting the other sleepers preferred position. These Adjustable bases come in both Eastern King sizes or Cal King Sizes. One of the challenges with a split king is there will be a small gap between the beds. If you or your spouse is used to taking up more than half the bed they will now be sleeping on a crack that can be uncomfortable.

Adjustable Bases: Adjustable Bases come in two types. (Many Models and features) Traditional Adjustable base that is one base the mattresses is laying on. When this adjustable base moves the entire mattress moves. For example if you like to read in bed sitting up then the entire head moves up adjusting the entire mattress. We already talked about the other type of adjustable base which is the split base that is used on a split king bed so that each bed can be adjusted according to the user needs and likes.
