Leaving Athens, the route follows the coast toward the Saronic Gulf, offering sweeping views of the rugged shoreline and the islands beyond. Calm waters and bright light belie the tension that filled these straits in 480 BC, when the fate of Greece hung on the balance.

From our vantage point on mount Aegaleo, where the Persian king sat, overlooking the entire bay of Salamis, our expert military advisors explain the naval battle of 480 BC in vivid and clear operational terms. Fleet compositions, command structures, ship maneuvers, sea currents, wind patterns and tactical decision-making, with special emphasis on how the Greeks deliberately drew the numerically superior Persian fleet into the bay’s confined waters.
