The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its latest telecom subscription data as of 31st May 2025, revealing critical trends and shifts in the Indian telecom sector.

Key Highlights:

Total Subscribers:
India’s total telephone subscriber base reached 1,207.08 million (120.7 crore), with urban areas showing stronger momentum than rural regions.

Wireless Subscribers:
Wireless (mobile + 5G FWA) users reached 1,168.42 million. Jio and Airtel led subscriber additions, while Vi and BSNL saw declines.

Wireline Growth:
Wireline subscribers grew to 38.66 million, a rare increase driven by urban demand and improved reporting.

Broadband Surge:
Broadband subscriptions jumped by over 31 million in May, reaching 974.87 million users—a 3.37% rise from April. Mobile broadband dominates with 922.99 million users, while wired broadband rose from 41.41 million to 44.09 million. Fixed wireless broadband (5G FWA) showed a statistical spike but actual users dipped slightly, indicating some earlier over-reporting.

Operator Performance:

Jio: Added over 2.7 million subscribers, maintaining its market leadership.

Airtel: Gained 275,621 subscribers, continuing steady growth.

Vi: Lost 274,103 subscribers, reflecting ongoing challenges.

BSNL: Lost 135,654 subscribers, continuing its downward trend.

Mobile Number Portability:
Mobile churn remains high, with 14 million users porting their numbers in May 2025.

Urban vs. Rural:
Urban wireless growth slowed, while rural areas saw modest increases. Urban tele-density remains much higher than rural, but the gap is slowly narrowing.

Market Share:
Jio and Airtel together account for the majority of new additions, while Vi and BSNL continue to lose market share.
