After serving physicians, dentists and attorneys for almost 20 years, our firm decided to open the Medical & Legal Specialty Division. It took us a little bit, because we wanted to ensure that when we took on a doctor as a client, that we had all the proper tools necessary to give them the service that they demand and require to grow as professionals and specialists in their fields.
During this time we’ve learned one valuable lesson that was a major turning point for our firm and many of our client’s lives. What is the most valuable asset of any practicing physician? Does anyone know? Just guess. (wait a few seconds and push for answers).

Many think it’s their Practice, or their clinics. Some think it’s their homes, investment properties or investment accounts. But what we learned many financial advisors in the nation were dangerously failing to address was income protection. Without an income or the ability to produce income, all your other valuable assets would most likely disappear, fade away, or be lost to liabilities and debt. The number one cause for individual bankruptcies in the USA as of 2018 is still one that you’re all very familiar with: Medical Bills. And those excruciating medical bills are inevitable even when you have top notch health insurance and they also add up quick. Disabilities have destroyed partnerships, individual practices, patients’ well-being, and more importantly, some lead to divorce and family breakups.
So why is this such a lightly discussed topic with most investment advisors? Several reasons:
1. Not all advisors offer or are licensed to offer all the necessary financial instruments available to put together an income protection plan.
2. Some physicians and dentist already have health issues and they don’t know how to address those issues. Just because you can’t get insurance doesn’t mean there’s no other way to protect your income.
And…
3. designing a Disability Income Insurance plan takes time and knowledge, and in many cases it involves thinking out of the box. But that’s why they call me the Disability Insurance Queen.

You see, I understand Disability and how it can destroy any financial plan, even those put together by the most elite group of financial professionals. My mother became mentally disabled when she was 50 years old due to severe trauma. And the truth is when you need money to survive or when you need money to provide for your family, you take it from whenever you can get it. And that’s usually your retirement plan, your partnership assets (if you’re a shareholder in a medical group) home equity lines, even other family members and relatives willing to give you a hand for a short time…and the list goes on.

So whether you believe in insurance or not, that’s beyond the point here. The truth of the fact is that at whatever stage of your career you’re in, Reliability of Income is a far superior necessity over Return on Investment.
