How To Convert Month Name to Month Number in Excel

Extracting month from date is easy. You can do that using Month Function:    • How to Use MONTH Function in Excel   But month function will only extract month from date or date serial number. What if you have month in text format? Or let’s say you’ve written month using three letters? In this excel tutorial for beginners I’ll show you how you can convert month name into number. It doesn’t matter if your month name is in text format. You’ll even convert 3 letter months to number in excel.

We’re going to use two functions here. First, we need to convert the text to a valid date serial number. I’ll do that using the Date Value function.
Write =Datevalue(A1&1)

This will convert our month name into a valid excel date serial number. Now we need to extract the month from that serial number and for that we will use the Month function. Now if we combine these two functions the formula will look like this
=Month(Datevalue(A1&1))

This is how you convert month name to month number in excel.
