Описание к видео How to Give an Informal Presentation

I'll be showing you how to give an informal presentation on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Register for one of my FREE communication trainings: https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/

1. Pretend as if you’re talking to an old friend. (0:47)

Let’s imagine the following scenario, you haven’t seen your best friend in over 10+ years, and you meet at a park in Italy since you both happened to be there. How would you talk to them? Would you worry about making grammatical errors or getting your punctuation, right? Here’s the secret, you wouldn’t, not even in the slightest. You would just be happy to see them, you would ask them how they’re doing and just take the conversation wherever it goes. That’s the beauty, I find, of informal presentations. This is how to give an informal presentation.

It’s a lot more casual, which means you might want to make this a discussion, rather than a formal presentations by asking questions like what do you think of the presentation so far? Going back to the old friend analogy, you wouldn’t just want to talk about yourself the entire time, you haven’t seen them in 10 YEARS, so you’ll probably want to ask them questions about their life (if you’re a good friend anyways I hope for your friend’s sake). As long as you treat your informal audience as informally as you would an old friend, you’ll find a nice balance between professionalism and just being happy to be there in their presence making your day. This is how to give an informal presentation.

2. Bring informal setting conversations to your informal presentations. (2:32)

I want you to think the last lunch or dinner you had with someone you care about recently. How did it go? You would probably respond with, what do you mean how did it go? It went well, it’s just another lunch, it was a great time. I want us to keep pushing the analogy here, though – so stick with me. In that lunch example, you’re enjoying the moment, you’re not speaking too quickly, you’re not trying to run away from the lunch as quickly as possible, you’re just taking your time to say what you want to say and listen when you want to listen – that’s it. Pretty simple stuff.

We don’t do that in any kind of presentation, especially informal ones and the reason is because we don’t treat public speaking like it’s having a coffee or a lunch with someone. Most of us see presentations as a chore. How do I get in this presentation and out of it as QUICKLY as humanly possible? This is how to give an informal presentation.

3. Break out of your old presentation self and transform into the speaker you’re meant to be. (4:17)

We always hear about the importance of getting out of your comfort zone. So, how does this apply to presentations that we’ll be giving in our lives? Most speakers, including me, were all stuck in this box. Our whole lives, we’ve presented subjects we weren’t passionate about, to students and colleagues who aren’t really interested either and to bosses and teachers who are stressed out of their mind. This is how to give an informal presentation.

No wonder we like to stay in this box and present average presentations if it gets us through the day. My ask of you to do break out of that shell as quickly as you can. How? By doing activities that get you out of it whether that happens to be taking an extra risk in presentation, a joke that you’re adding even if you’re not funny, a bit of sarcasm even if you’re not sarcastic, that improv class you always wanted to check out, but was too afraid to go, do the things that no one else is willing to do to get the result that no one else will get to have.
