In the Asia Cup 2025 match held in Dubai, India decisively defeated Pakistan by seven wickets. However, the victory was overshadowed by a controversy as the Indian team, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, refused to participate in the customary post-match handshakes with the Pakistani players. This break from cricket tradition was reportedly a form of protest linked to recent political and border tensions between the two countries.
Ahead of the match, the match referee had advised the Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with the Indian captain, and the Indian team had informed the referee of their decision to skip the handshakes. After the win, Indian players walked directly to their dressing room, leaving Pakistani players waiting for the usual handshake, which did not happen. Pakistan’s team manager lodged a formal protest with the match referee, calling India’s conduct unsportsmanlike and contrary to the spirit of cricket.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) escalated the matter by filing an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), also demanding the removal of the match referee for allegedly facilitating the no-handshake situation. The PCB chairman criticized India for dragging politics into the sport and called for respect and sportsmanship in future matches. Meanwhile, several former Pakistan cricketers expressed frustration and disappointment over the incident.
Under ICC rules, showing respect to opponents after a match is part of the “Spirit of Cricket,” and not shaking hands can be considered a Level 1 offense, though penalties are usually mild. The incident has stirred significant debate about sportsmanship and the political tensions spilling onto the cricket field between India and Pakistan
