Along Kenya’s coast, something as simple as a bright light can mean life or death for a baby sea turtle. Artificial lighting from beachfronts often confuses hatchlings, pulling them away from the ocean, where they are instinctively meant to go. Even nesting mothers struggle to find safe, dark beaches to lay their eggs.

With support from WWF-Kenya, local Turtle Conservation Groups (TCGs) are using red lights that are safe for turtles while still allowing conservation work to continue. These community groups have been trained, equipped, and connected through a national marine turtle database and mobile data tools, ensuring stronger protection for these endangered species.

This effort was made possible by local volunteers and WWF Denmark, funded by Beckett-Fonden.

Every red light switch ensures a nest is watched, allowing hatchlings to reach the ocean. It is all part of a bigger story of hope.
