How lucrative is data extortion compared to just paying a ransom? In this episode of our Security Gets Serious podcast, Ben Carr, Ryan Golden, and Anthony Freed tackle this question while discussing findings from Verizon’s 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR).

This year’s report reveals that roughly one-third of all breaches involved ransomware or another form of extortion. However, pure extortion attacks have been on the rise, now comprising 9% of all breaches. While typical ransomware demands can range from thousands of dollars to over $25 million, offering an immediate payout, data exfiltration offers a different—and potentially more lucrative—path for attackers.

As Ben Carr explains, once data is exfiltrated, there’s no guarantee that it will be deleted or won’t be used for malicious purposes. Exfiltrated data can include sensitive information about customers, partners, and vendors, leaving these organizations vulnerable to future attacks or extortion attempts. This makes data extortion a more strategic play than a one-time ransom payment, as attackers can continue to leverage stolen data for ongoing profits.
