Cholera is mainly because of water contamination and it is due to feco oral contamination. So the water gets contaminated by the fecal matter. So it is because of improper sanitization. So it is seen among rural areas or urban slums where there is no proper sanitation and people defecate in the open, which can contaminated the drinking after and that is when people get infected or affected by cholera and the best way of preventing is that what is called as WaSH where we have cleaning drinking water, washing your hands, sanitation , that is not defecating in the open air and hygiene. Hygiene is washing your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water before eating your food or after using the toilet. So these are the preventive measures. So drinking safe water is by having safe water to drink and by boiling water. That is the best method , or you have a filter at home, that is the reverse osmosis, the RO filter what most of the houses have that. Those who do to have that can use boiled water to drink. Eat healthy food and avoid street food because that can be contaminated because the person who is making the food can be contaminated his hand with cholera and that gets transmitted to the food and then to us. So the best way is to avoid street food and to eat hot freshly cooked food, that is the best way to prevent cholera. The first step to treatment is the diarrhea that the person gets. So there is dehydration and you need to drink a lot of water, just plain water or coconut water or it can be oral rehydration solution which can be made at home. A lemon juice with a pinch of salt can be helpful or the ORS packet which is available in the medical store, which can be taken orally or it is that you also have antibiotics for treatment of cholera. For which you need to speak to your family physician if you have diarrhea which is not getting better and if you have cholera. Speak to your family physician and ask for further treatment.
