In this episode of our New Orleans travel vlog we visit Audubon Park in Uptown New Orleans for some exercise and other fun outdoor activities. Join us as we do a running and walking virtual tour by foot of Audubon Park which is one of the most popular places for exercise in New Orleans. Audubon Park is bordered by the Mississippi River, Exposition Boulevard, Walnut Street and St. Charles Avenue next to Tulane and Loyola Universities. Before the War Between the States the land served as plantations where the first commercial crop of sugarcane was raised in Louisiana. The plantation structures were destroyed during the war when Union troops occupied the land where they built Camp Lewis and Sedgewick Hospital. The last traces of the plantations are the huge Live Oak trees in the park. Audubon Park was originally named Upper City Park until it was renamed in 1886 in honor of naturalist John James Audubon. In 1898 John Charles Olmsted was hired to design plans for Audubon Park. Olmsted’s plans were only partially completed but his designs are evident in the current park today. Audubon Park offers a golf course, tennis courts, riding stables, playgrounds and a 1.8 mile jogging path. Audubon Park is about 14 minutes and 5 miles from the French Quarter.
