"When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" was Penned by the renowned hymn writer Isaac Watts and first published in his collection Hymns and Spiritual Songs in 1707, it marked a departure from the prevailing style of English hymnody of the time.

Watts' hymn is significant not only for its departure from the tradition of using only paraphrased biblical texts but also for its lyrical innovation. While drawing upon biblical themes, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" weaves together a profound contemplation on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ with rich poetic imagery. The hymn's literary style reflects the English baroque period, characterized by its ornate language and intricate structure.
Despite its literary sophistication, the hymn found its true musical match later on. The melody commonly associated with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" is known as "Hamburg," adapted from a plainchant melody by American composer Lowell Mason. Mason's adaptation, first written in 1824 and published a year later, did not gain widespread recognition until the late 19th century.

Nonetheless, the enduring popularity of "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" lies in the seamless fusion of Watts' poignant lyrics with the solemn beauty of the "Hamburg" melody.
