In this video, Rich Newman from the National Watch and Clock Museum showcases an extraordinary example of early horology — a 1690 Sun and Moon Watch by Ahasuerus Fromanteel II.

This piece blends astronomy and watchmaking in one of the most creative ways imaginable. Its rotating disc shows the sun and clouds during the day and the moon and stars at night, all powered by a gilded brass movement with a silver champlevé dial.

It features Roman numerals for hours, an Arabic outer ring for minutes, and even a rare seconds dial — nearly unheard of for the 17th century. The watch sits within a silver pair case with a turtle-shell outer layer decorated in gold and silver pique work.

More than a beautiful artifact, this watch represents early innovation in precision and design, linking England’s pioneering Fromanteel clockmakers to the roots of modern timekeeping.
