Clubhouse is the exclusive, invite-only and highly sought-after app that even the likes of Elon Musk and Oprah Winfrey seem to be frequenting. 📱 ➡️ 🎧

One month, two Elon Musk name drops and I’m not even mad about it, naturally we had to see what all the cool kids were talking about - what is the Clubhouse app? How do you use it and most importantly, should you sign up?

What is the Clubhouse app❓❓❓
Clubhouse is currently an invite-only app, meaning you can only be a clubhouse user if you’ve been invited by an existing user, we should totally get jackets. What really separated this app from the ones we’ve seen is that it is 100% an audio-only based platform, it’s like if TED Talks, podcasts and Linkedin were to have a little app baby. It also isn’t just a platform for serious business talk, although many professionals do operate on there - there’s talks about parenthood - relationships, religion - sci-fi which is super cool and it gives users a huge selection to choose from.

How do you use it❓❓❓
When you open the app you’ll see the home page with different rooms that have been created by various users, this really is the meat of the app, it’s what it’s all about! What you see on this hub will be a combination of people you’re following, their rooms or rooms that they are currently in.

The actual operation of this app is easy enough to use once you understand it’s capabilities, admittedly, it did take me a minute to get the hang of, and to shake the feeling that people could hear me whilst I went from room to room.
You will find that some icons are familiar enough - like the calendar at the top, or alternatively an overview calendar on your homepage. Likewise to other social networking platforms it logs your activity like who has followed you. You also have a profile with a bio and photo which can be edited at any point.

Navigating the rooms❓❓❓
If you enter a room just as a listener, you will automatically be on mute. You can enter any room that appears on your home page and you can participate in these discussions, these rooms will generally have a title and follow some kind of theme. Once you’ve joined the room there will be hosts and moderators at the top, indicated with a ‘mic’ or green icon and whoever is talking will have a grey frame around their photo. In these rooms you can participate at your own risk, by clicking the little ‘hand’ icon and if the moderator allows it, you’ll be moved up to the stage section at the top and have your time to shine by ‘unmuting’ yourself. Be warned - you will have to actually...verbally... speak, so be prepared but it is up to you, I generally just listen, for me it’s valuable enough and I still feel involved. It’s pretty cool that you can see all of the listeners and participants within rooms and it’s a great place to make more connections. You can also ping connections to notify them about the room and listen simultaneously. Now, if you wanted to create your own room this app gives you all the tools and a great platform to promote yourself.

Should you download Clubhouse❓❓❓
This app has honestly got me a little excited, hopefully it isn’t just a phase because I think it’s a super interesting way to stay-in-the-loop or just to pass time!
I think this app actually gives users access to a community of people you wouldn’t usually have access to, letting you listen to thoughts and feelings in real-time from different communities and best of all, letting you participate in the conversation.
When it comes to Clubhouse there are very few privacy focused controls. It is early days with this app and maybe they’ll learn the hard way when it comes to connection recommendations and stringent privacy practises. Either way, they do have a detailed privacy policy on their app that you can review at any time and see if that’s something you’re okay with.
