Places to See in Medellin, Colombia | Comuna 13 Tour

Once one of the most dangerous places on Earth, Comuna 13 is now one of the safest spots in Medellin, Colombia. Since Operation Orion in 2002, which was a bloody two-day military offensive to permanently remove the presence of the paramilitaries in Comuna 13, the neighborhood has undergone a dramatic transformation and is now a popular tourist destination.

I was honored to be able to chat with some of the inhabitants and to see the vibrant community that they have created. My guide Johan was incredible and took us on a rollercoaster of emotions as he recounted the dark history of Comuna 13 and the inspirational transformation that it has undergone.

Many may think that it’s just a tourist trap now, but I think it’s important to visit such places to learn about them. Keep in mind that what you see there is a complete contrast of what was there 22 years ago, and the hope that exists in Comuna 13 now definitely wasn’t there in 2002.
