"Xawiƚƚ Kwñchawaay", "The Cocopah People" are Native Americans who live in Baja California, in Mexico.. and Arizona, in the United States. In the United States, Cocopah people belong to the federally recognized 'Cocopah Tribe of Arizona'. The Cocopah are also called the 'Cucapá', (in the Cocopa language: 'Kwapa', or 'Kwii Capáy'). The Cocopah language belongs to the Delta–California branch of the Yuman language family. Their self-designation is "Xawiƚƚ kwñchawaay", translating to: “Those Who Live On The Cloudy River”. Ancestors of the Cocopah People inhabited parts of present-day Arizona, California and Baja California.. and are known by western academics as belonging to the Patayan culture.
"Throughout the mid 1800's and early 1900's, the Cocopah Indian Tribe, effectively, resisted assimilation to an established reservation and maintained its social, religious and cultural identities.President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order No. 2711, in 1917, which established the Reservation. In 1985, the Cocopah Tribe gained an additional 4,200 acres.., including the North Reservation, through the Cocopah Land Acquisition Bill, signed by President Ronald Reagan. Historical records show, that the Cocopah domain once included portions of Arizona, southern California and Sonora, Mexico. The 'Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo' divided the U.S.-Mexican border and the Cocopah lands between the two countries, in 1848. Since 1930, the Cocopah (U.S.) and the Cucapá (Mexico) Peoples have been forced to end Tribal unity."
