The role of a psychologist and therapist is similar to that of a doctor who sets a broken bone. They have the knowledge, information, and data to help you heal, but they still need your cooperation as their patient to fully recover.
Just as a medical doctor cannot heal a broken bone without the patient following their instructions for physical therapy and taking necessary medications, a psychologist or therapist also relies on the patient's willingness to actively participate in therapy sessions and follow through with recommended exercises or coping strategies.
In order to achieve the best results and make progress in therapy, the patient must be open, honest, and committed to the process. Together, the psychologist/therapist and patient work as a team to address challenges, build coping skills, and ultimately achieve healing and growth.
