Restoring a Mid-Century Lamp**
Let me introduce my latest project – a worn-out mid-century lamp in desperate need of a makeover. This restoration will be a challenge, but I’m excited to bring it back to life. If you’re curious about the details, check out my YouTube video where I document the entire process.
At first glance, it was obvious that this lamp had seen better days. It had **visible dents**, **rust patches**, and areas where the **paint had chipped away**. This would take some work, but I was ready for the challenge!

*Step 1: Taking the Lamp Apart*
The first step was to *completely disassemble the lamp**. I started by removing the **lampshade* and detaching the socket. Everything was going smoothly until small metal pieces unexpectedly fell out when I took off the lamp neck. I soon realized that the lamp had a *swivel mechanism* with loose parts. That was a surprise—I had never seen this type of design before!
Next, I unscrewed all the connections, removed the wiring, and carefully stored the small parts for later. When I opened the **lamp base**, I discovered another issue: it was far rustier than I had expected. It looked like the lamp had been sitting on a damp surface for years. Once I had everything apart, I was ready for the next step.
---
*Step 2: Stripping the Paint and Removing Rust*
The old *shrink paint* had to go since it was flaking off in several spots. I applied *paint remover* and let it sit overnight. The next morning, I was able to peel off most of the paint easily, but some stubborn sections required extra scrubbing with **sandpaper**.
As for the **dents**, I realized that my tools weren’t strong enough to fix them. After thinking it over, I decided to leave them as they were and **paint over them**, embracing them as part of the lamp’s history. Later, I learned that I could have used filler to smooth them out—something I’ll definitely try in the future.
Then came the toughest job: **removing rust**. With sandpaper and patience, I tackled the rusted spots, focusing on the heavy cast iron base, which was the most corroded part. It was a tedious process, especially considering this part wouldn’t even be visible when the lamp was reassembled.
Once the rust was gone, I used *400-grit sandpaper* to smooth the surfaces, getting them ready for priming and painting. Finally, I cleaned everything with acetone to thoroughly remove dust and grease, ensuring the primer adheres properly.
---
*Step 3: Priming & Painting*
This is where things started to get exciting—the lamp was about to get a *brand-new color**! Before painting, I applied a **rust-resistant primer* to protect the metal from future corrosion.
After priming, I sanded everything again with *600-grit sandpaper* to remove any imperfections. Then, I finally got to my favorite part: *painting!* I chose a **deep, dark green**, a color that’s stylish yet not too flashy. Since green is my favorite color, the decision was an easy one. If you want to see how the painting turned out, check out my video!
Once the paint dried, I was ready for the final step: **putting the lamp back together**.
---
*Step 4: Reassembling the Lamp*
Putting the lamp back together felt like solving a puzzle. I carefully reattached each part, secured the *lamp neck**, fixed the **lampshade* in place, and made sure all screws were tightened properly.
I also replaced the *wiring* during this step. Quick note: *This is not an electrical guide!* Working with electricity can be dangerous, so electrical repairs should only be done by professionals or those with proper knowledge.
If you noticed a difference in the video, the *cable running from the lampshade to the base changed* during the process. Originally, I tried using a standard three-core cable, but it was too thick to fit through the lamp neck. I temporarily switched to a two-core cable but later found a **thin three-core chandelier cable**, which was the perfect fit.

*Final Result – A Stunning Transformation!*
After all that effort, the lamp restoration was finally complete! It now has a fresh new look, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. *What do you think?*
