Leamington Spa, a.k.a. Royal Leamington Spa, is located in the English county of Warwickshire, just next to Warwick itself.

Having started out as a small village called Leamington Priors, it grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th century following the discovery of its spa waters, hence the name. In 1838 a young Queen Victoria granted it the 'Royal' prefix, thus it was known as Royal Leamington Spa from then on. Technically it still is, although the 'Royal' prefix is often dropped in everyday parlance.

The name is based on the River Leam which flows through the town. The spa waters had been known in Roman times, but it took until 1784 for them to be rediscovered by William Abbotts and Benjamin Satchwell, which led to an influx of tourists coming in to utilise their medicinal qualities. In 1814 the Royal Pump Rooms were opened to keep up with the demand, boasting 17 hot baths and 3 cold baths. However, these were eventually closed and sold on in 1868 due to a waning demand, possibly due to competition from continental spas. Today the building functions as a museum, gallery, cafe and library.

Owing to its ascendancy in the early 19th century, Leamington Spa boasts some very prominent Regency architecture. Typical traits are the tall white stucco terraces, whether completely straight, like The Parade (the first big street towards the beginning of the walk), or as sweeping crescents, like Lansdowne Crescent (seen at the end of the walk).
