#Prehistoric Africa is the cradle of human history, with evidence pointing to the continent as the birthplace of early human ancestors. Some of the most significant discoveries have been made in East Africa, where the oldest known fossils of early hominins have been found.

Around 4 to 6 million years ago, early hominins such as Australopithecus walked the Earth. These species, like the famous "Lucy," were among the first to exhibit bipedalism—walking on two legs—which was a crucial step in human evolution.

Later, around 2.5 million years ago, Homo habilis emerged. Known as "handy man" for their use of simple tools, Homo habilis represents a significant leap in cognitive development and technological innovation. This period marks the beginning of the Stone Age, characterized by the creation and use of stone tools.

The transition from these early hominins to more advanced species like Homo erectus and eventually Homo sapiens demonstrates a gradual evolution in brain size, tool complexity, and social behavior. By about 300,000 years ago, Homo sapiens—modern humans—appeared in Africa. These early humans developed sophisticated tools, engaged in symbolic behavior, and spread out across the continent, eventually migrating to other parts of the world.

This prehistoric period in Africa is pivotal because it encompasses the origins of human development and the evolutionary advancements that laid the foundation for all future human societies.
