CATHEDRAL RANGES OVERNIGHT HIKE | Wells Cave Track to Sugarloaf Peak | Southern & Northern Circuit

The hiking vlog from Cathedral Ranges State Park including Wells Cave Track, Sugarloaf Peak, Southern Circuit, The Farmyard and Northern Circuit.

We decided to make up our own way for our overnight hike in Cathedral Range State Park. We combined the Southern Circuit and Northern Circuit to create a longer hike, camping at The Farmyard to break up the two hikes.

We began our ascent from Cooks Mill Campground, one of the main drive-in campsites at 378m. We decided to walk along the road up to Sugarloaf Saddle, where we began the climb up to Sugarloaf Peak. There are two routes to choose from at Sugarloaf Saddle, the Wells Cave Track or the Canyon Track. I have done the ascent up both and they are both extremely steep, with exposed rock faces and both involve rock scrambling.

This was our first time up through Wells Cave, so we opted for that track, even though the signs said not to go that way with backpacks. We were up for a challenge. We just managed to squeeze the packs through by taking them off and literally dragging them behind us. The cave was very narrow and I’m sure some people would get quite claustrophobic in there!

After the cave, the track continued on up the vertical rock face and it turns out Wells Cave wasn’t the toughest section…

We eventually made it to Sugarloaf Peak where we were greeted with incredible views over the rest of the range and the surrounding mountains. Definitely the best viewpoint in the whole park.

Two more hours of hiking got us to The Farmyard where we set up camp for the night. The gorgeous hike-in campground was so peaceful. We rose early the next day and did a quick hike, hoping to catch the sunrise from South Jawbone Peak.

After breakfast we continued on to the Northern Circuit, where we summited The Cathedral (840m) and North Cathedral Peak. Then our descent began down to Neds Saddle, and then Neds Gully Campground. We then followed the flat Little River Track back to Cooks Mill Campground where we left the ute.

It was a gorgeous hike and would definitely recommend the hike, or even just a short day hike up to Sugarloaf Peak and back. Be prepared with proper gear and supplies as the track is very steep and we have seen how easy it is for people to get injured there and need rescuing!
