NOTES
"Variations on Ashes" was inspired by the track “Down At Liberty Ashes” by Pyrrhon, from their record “Abscess Time”. The drum patterns in this tune compelled me to sketch out the rhythms that ended up being the central rhythmic paragraph in this movement for solo percussion. The performance restrictions demanded of a percussion piece operating under a shelter-in-place policy that is kind to neighbors guided the instrumentation: glass bottle, tin tray, and woodblock placed on a tabletop.
"Corpus callosum" consists of polyrhythms and tempo modulations which are threaded together with a common pulse. Tempos and note values make abrupt changes, but through each change, either the left hand or the right hand maintains an absolute steady pulse. The left/right independence that the piece demands inspired the title “Corpus callosum”, is the largest bundle of fibers in the brain connecting the left and right hemispheres.
