Our train has emerged from the dramatic Manawatu Gorge to arrive at Woodville station where passengers stretch their legs and take the opportunity to photograph DA Class diesel locomotive No. 1431, looking splendid in its red and white livery. Steam incorporated can be justifiably proud of this beautifully turned out rake of vintage carriages and diesel locomotive. With everyone back on board we continue to Hastings and Napier along this freight only line, passing over numerous high viaducts, we follow the contours of the attractive landscape, punctuated with the occasional village or small town. There are numerous sidings, serving the industries that keep this line in business, agriculture, refrigerated meat, milk processing, aggregate and fertiliser products all contribute to the often heavy freight trains that use this route. We enter Hastings through an avenue of pretty shrubbery and flower beds, after a short wait we set off on the last leg of our journey crossing a number of long bridges over meandering river estuaries to arrive in Napier where the Art Deco celebrations are in full swing.
