Leading for patient safety - an interview with Partha Kar

Partha Kar, National Specialty Advisor for NHS England, talks to Steph O'Donohue from Patient Safety Learning about his approach to leading for safety.

Partha has led work that has had life-changing impact for patients and for patient safety. While in his national post advising on diabetes care:

continuous glucose monitoring has been made available to everyone with type 1 diabetes
there has been a near universal uptake of continuous glucose monitoring for pregnant women with type 1 diabetes, improving outcomes for both mother and baby
uptake rates of continuous glucose monitoring among Black children has doubled, and disparities in area have started to reduce.

In this interview, Partha talks about the power of the patient community, workforce morale, sharing failures and leading with honesty.
