This is the Northland Mall in Sterling, IL, as seen in July 2022. This is also the tale of a mall that has rebounded significantly. When looking at pictures of this mall from a couple years ago, it was rather empty. In recent times, several local merchants have filled the storefronts in the mall and as of my visit this summer the occupancy rate was pretty thriving. The Illinois Furniture & More store appears to have opened since then, and as a result one can walk the long, liminal hallway on the right side of the mall, which had been closed off when JCPenney had left. This mall retains an 80's charm but has adapted quite well to the times. I would describe it as a comfortable place. If you are driving through north-central Illinois, make sure to stop by here and shop. And also, if you're in the mood for a good meal after mall walking, drive through downtown Sterling and visit the Parkway Restaurant, a great old-fashioned diner with 60's era décor, homemade food, and affordable prices! This was one of the many highlights of my summer Midwestern adventure.
