We Bought & Traded For The Coolest Toys & Games in Utah!

We were once again invited to the Utah Retro Game Expo, let's take you around the hall, inside the booths, show you what we bought, and why I'm dumb for buying the same game twice. Again.

2023 marked the first year I attended the Utah Retro Game Swap, and I had an absolute blast. I felt blessed when they invited me out for a second consecutive year for the 2024 event, an expanded one. In 2024 they changed the name to the Utah Retro Game Expo and added a day to the show. Now taking place on Friday and Saturday, I was truly excited and geared up to go.

Right now I am still very much in selling mode, after some of the struggles that we have had since February of 2024. However, my youngest daughter recently saw the Nintendo Switch version of the Disney Classics Collections from Capcom featuring Aladdin, The Lion King, and Jungle Book. She wanted to play these, not on the Switch but on the original Super Nintendo.

Set up for the show began at 8a.m. on Friday morning, and I quickly got everything all set up and placed. This included my 3D Printed LED light boxes, a tub of games for sale, and my NEStoration No cut region free mod kits for the Super Nintendo and Super NNES Jr, along with the Nitro Refresh and Switcheroo cleaners for the 3DS and Nintendo switch systems and games.

As I walked around the show during setup, I noticed a gentleman who had crocheted Super Mario characters that he was setting out. One was a crocheted princess Peach which I had to grab and bring home for my youngest. He also had a Stomper playset from the '80s, one I had back in the day. He had it listed at $300, more on this later.

When the doors opened to the public I was floored how many people were there. I figured that on a Friday we wouldn't see guests show up until after normal working hours. But the crowds were there early, they were fun, and everybody was excited to be at the show.

I only had one panel for this show, which was Friday night with John Riggs, Gabbo from the Pixel Game Squad, and Mr Wrightway. The topic was to make money by creating content on YouTube. Each of us had our own perspectives to share, our own advice, and stories. Everyone's experience was a little bit different which helped provide tips and guidance to others there.

After hanging out and commiserating with Kris from Game Dad, John Riggs, and the Mortal Kombat crew Friday night, Saturday morning started bright and early. I actually wound up walking around the hall Saturday morning before anyone got there, and that was a pretty unique experience that I don't know many other people do when covering conventions. I did not have any panels on Saturday, so for the most part, I just got to hang out with people at the show, Kris, Ryan from Archades Games, and Riggs.

As I mentioned, I'm not really buying a lot right now, but I did to find a copy of The Lion King for only $7. At least I had it in my head that it was the Lion King it was the Jungle Book. Later on Saturday afternoon, I found a copy of The Jungle Book for only $5! Terrific, I had both games that I was looking for! Then I looked at the labels and realized that I'm stupid and I bought two copies of The Jungle Book. Thankfully, the booth that sold me the second copy also had a copy of The Lion King and did an even exchange for me.

In addition to purchasing those two games, I made two trades at the show. The first was to trade one of my LED light boxes for a Blinking Light Win mod kit for the original NES front loader. I've had one in my front loader for about 6 years now, and it's a fantastic kit. The problem is the fact that you can't get them anymore. I had actually looked at possibly purchasing the copyrights and patents from the original company, but since then there are two other devices out that replace the blinking light when in the market. Still, this is something that I can put into an NES and sell later on down the road.

The other trade I made was for something I never figured I would have. Remember the Stomper set that I mentioned earlier? Well, I traded one of my World of Nintendo lights for it, even up. I had jokingly asked the seller what it would take for me to trade for it, and he said one of your lights. The good news is it was cheap for me, bad news is that I have to have it shipped home.

I cannot thank the fans and organizers of the Utah Retro Game Expo enough for the hospitality and friendship that they showed me during their event. While I have other events I consider to be hometown shows, the Illinois Game Con and the Midwest Gaming Classic, the Utah Retro Game Expo treats me like family. And it's a blessing to have people in your corner that are so wonderful. If you have the opportunity to attend this event you need to put this on your go-to list as it's one of the best out there.
